Executive Summary

Analysis of data collected by the Infra4NextGen project finds that there is widespread concern about the introduction of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the workplace and limited familiarity with the technology.

The data has been collected from the CRONOS-3 panel survey, fielded in 11 different countries, with a particular focus on differences between age cohorts and between levels of education across all countries. The report was written by Lasse Marz and Anja-Kristin Abendroth (Bielefeld University).

The data finds that a large majority of people in all cohorts feel uncomfortable with the introduction of AI, especially for internal processes such as discipline. However, there is greater, if not widespread, acceptance of the use of AI for administrative tasks and employee training. In addition, significant numbers of respondents felt like their job was at risk of replacement by AI, with over 35s the most concerned.

The data also showed that there was largely an even split between those who believed technological advancement would have a positive impact and those who believed that technology would have a negative impact, with the under 35s and more highly educated being the most optimistic. Finally, usage of AI remains low, with a majority of respondents reporting they never use AI for text creation.
