Data collected earlier this year in the third wave of the CROss-National Online Survey (CRONOS-3) self-completion panel has been released.

Questions focused on the five key areas of the Infra4NextGen project: Make it… Digital, Equal, Green, Healthy and Strong.

Respondents were invited to complete the survey online or via a paper self-completion questionnaire for Wave 3 of the survey fielded in 11 countries from 15 January until 14 February 2025.

As with the previous two waves fielded in September-October 2024 and November-December 2024 respondents from 11 countries were invited to participate: Austria, Belgium, Czechia, Finland, France, Hungary, Iceland, Poland, Portugal, Slovenia, and the United Kingdom.

Wave 3 questions focused on digital communication, social media, online scams, and experiences of using the internet (Make it Digital).

Question under the Make it Equal theme centred on discrimination, equal opportunities, and the rights of lesbian, gay, and transgender people.

Make it Green questions included in Wave 3 looked at the transport habits of respondents, the use of energy efficient appliances, and personal efforts to reduce the effects of climate change.

Healthy questions included accessing healthcare services online, the use of medication, behaviour that leads to cancer risk, subjective physical and mental health, and employment.

Wave 3 items around Make it Strong asked respondents about skills and training, opportunities for young people, and employment issues – including parental leave.

In each wave of the survey, around 90 questions – 18 on each of the theme – are asked of respondents recruited from the European Social Survey to this large-scale, cross-national, probability-based, mixed-mode panel following an input-harmonised approach.

Panel recruitment, setup, maintenance, and data processing are guided by the same methodological principles in all participating countries.

It means open access data from the three waves fielded since September 2024 – approximately 270 questions – is now accessible via the ESS Data Portal.

The ESS Data Portal has been adapted so that data for all available waves can be accessed for each of the five themes: Digital, Equal, Green, Healthy and Strong.

Data is accessible via the Variable Viewer tool which allows users to view automatically weighted data for each of the survey items fielded.

The analysis tab on the Data Portal also allows users to view data for each question alongside other variables, including a comparison between respondents aged under 35 and 35 and above.

Professor Rory Fitzgerald, Director of the European Social Survey, and Coordinator of the Infra4NextGen project, welcomed the release:

“This latest release demonstrates how the CRONOS web panel can be deployed to address the most pressing policy concerns.

“We look forward to researchers and policy analysts exploring our data to examine how the next generation of Europeans are faring in these five key areas.”

Two further waves of data are still to be released as part of this project.
