The first wave of the Infra4NextGen (I4NG) CROss-National Online Survey 3 (CRONOS-3) Panel is currently being fielded in 11 countries.
An initial survey of 90 questions has been developed that includes items on each of the five NextGenerationEU themes.
Work on designing the questionnaire for the next three waves of the panel survey has also been undertaken during the first six months of the I4NG project.
As planned for all five waves of the panel, this first survey contains 18 questions on each topic, led by a team based at the European Social Survey (ESS).
The ESS was assisted in this task by experts appointed to each of the five themes: Make it… Digital, Equal, Green, Healthy and Strong.
The Wave 1 questionnaire covers poverty and inequalities, climate change and energy, climate policies and educational opportunities.
There are also questions on using the internet, digital activities and experiences of using various medical services.
The survey has been sent to respondents in 11 countries – Austria, Belgium, Czechia, Finland, France, Hungary, Iceland, Poland, Portugal, Slovenia and the United Kingdom – in both online and paper format.
Respondents to the panel were recruited at the end of ESS Round 10 (2020-22) and Round 11 (2023/24) interviews.
Once they confirmed their involvement, panellists were sent an incentive followed by a weblink to complete the questionnaire online unless they stated that they did not use the internet in rounds 10 or 11 of the main survey.
Offline participants were instead sent a paper questionnaire via the postal system in each country and asked to return completed questionnaires in a freepost envelope.
Once all responses been collected from panellists, weighting of the data will be undertaken by the Institute for Social and Economic Research to ensure that the data is representative of each country’s population.
Data from the first wave of the survey will be available via the ESS Data Portal in spring 2025.
This is the third iteration of the CROss-National Online Survey (CRONOS) Panel. The first was conducted in three countries (2016-18) and the second was fielded in 12 countries (2021-23). Both iterations were part of Horizon 2020 projects. More information about these rounds is available.
CRONOS-3 is being implemented as part of I4NG. The online questionnaire is centrally managed by the ESS and administered by Centerdata and ESS national teams. These national teams are based at Institute for Advanced Studies Vienna, IHS (Austria), KU Leuven (Belgium), Institute of Sociology of the Czech Academy of Sciences(Czechia), University of Turku (Finland), Sciences Po (France), Social Science Research Center, HUN-REN TK(Hungary), University of Iceland (Iceland), Polish Academy of Sciences (Poland), Institute of Social Sciences, University of Lisbon, ICS-UL (Portugal), University of Ljubljana (Slovenia) and National Centre for Social Research (United Kingdom).
