Venue: Online
Webinar
As part of Infra4NextGen, AUSSDA – The Austrian Social Science Data Archive hosted a webinar on data protection in research on Wednesday 5 February 2025.
Anita Bodlos (University of Innsbruck) and Lisa Hirsch (University of Vienna) explained how researchers can meet the requirements of European data protection laws while adhering to open science principles.
The speakers provided valuable insights into the key aspects of data protection and explained how to process personal data in compliance with the law.
Relevant aspects of European data protection legislation (GDPR) were outlined in the context of challenges that arise from meeting open science requirements.
The webinar covered important aspects of consent forms, which frequently provide the legal basis for processing personal data in the social sciences.
The speakers also explained how researchers can anonymise data for archiving, publication, and re-use.
What to expect:
- GDPR for researchers: get a clear overview of the relevant regulations and their application in research.
- Challenges of open science: find out how to align open science principles with data protection laws.
- Consent forms: learn the crucial elements of consent forms to ensure the legal grounds for data processing.
- Anonymizing data: discover how to anonymize data for archiving, publication, and reuse, in accordance with GDPR requirements.
By watching this webinar, you will be able to:
- Understand the key aspects of European data protection legislation.
- Analyse and select anonymization strategies for your research.
- Apply best practices to your own research projects.
Don’t miss the chance to ensure your research is compliant with data protection legislation while fulfilling open science requirements.
The webinar offered a practical insight into data anonymisation strategies used in major survey programmes such as the European Social Survey (ESS), CROss-National Online Survey (CRONOS) Panel, European Values Study (EVS) and Generations and Gender Programme (GGP).
